In 2011, Animal Balance conducted a feasibility assessment in the city of Havana, Cuba and discovered that the conditions were favorable for a sterilization campaign. In 2013, we held a training for Trap Neuter and Return (TNR) and in February 2016 we returned to hold a MASH training clinic with the Department of the Historian and the Veterinary School of Havana. As of March 2016, we worked out an agreement with the Department of the Historian to design, create and implement a 5-year TNR program for Havana’s street cats and dogs. These plans were approved in January 2017. We are currently working on a training program which would enable the Cuban animal welfare organizations and veterinarians to hold intensive, targeted TNR campaigns, multiple times each year. Our goal is to help build up their capacity to sterilize pets and street cats and dogs.
